Amy Stechler was the Emmy-nominated director of PBS’s The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo (2005) and the ex-wife and early collaborator of documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. She passed away on Friday, August 26, at her home in Walpole, New Hampshire.

She was 67.

Her daughters Sarah and Lilly Burns informed The New York Times of her passing, stating that Stechler had been suffering from multiple sclerosis and had been deteriorating health.

In the 1970s, Stechler and Burns studied at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Stechler quickly joined Florentine Films when Burns, two other Hampshire classmates, Roger Sherman and Buddy Squires, founded the company in 1976.

The group’s debut endeavor was the 1982 PBS airing of the Oscar-nominated documentary Brooklyn Bridge, which made its festival rounds in 1981.

Steckler is survived by her companion Bill Patterson and other members of her extended family in addition to her daughters.

Steckler’s net worth was 3 million when she died.

Her funeral is yet to be held.
