It's easy to see the hints of Taylor Swift's career in pop-country outfit the Band Perry. Both acts started with a traditional country sound before transitioning to writing pop songs. But for the Band Perry, that shift has been a bit rocky so far: The sibling trio released a poorly received pop single last summer and then separated from their label, Republic Nashville, earlier this year and signed with the significantly less-twangy Interscope.

That single, “Live Forever,” showcased an uptempo, club-ready sound, along with a video full of neon colors and dancing. It was a stark change for the Grammy Award-winning group, whose previous singles featured more traditional pop-country elements: front woman Kimberly Perry’s pure, sweet vocals (“All Your Life”); the rich, folksy harmonies of her brothers, Reid and Neil (“If I Die Young”); feisty fiddle lines (“You Lie”); and tales of true love with dark undertones against infidelity (“Better Dig Two”).

For a group that had such a timelessly beautiful country sound, it’ll be interesting to see how the transition to pop goes on its upcoming third album, tentatively titled “Heart + Beat.” Only time will tell if the trio’s move will prove as lucrative as Swift’s foray into the pop charts, but hopefully the Band Perry won’t lose sight of the sonic elements that made its early singles so successful.
